Stillnothinghe’sdoneinthepasttoquiteprepareanyonefortheidiosyncraticanduniquepleasuresofTheEroticHuman,insomewayshismostradicalandpersonalwork,apowerfulandsometimesshockinglyhonestessayabouteros,agingandloss.Thepremiseisdeceptivelysimple.Lethtravelstoseveralcountries(thelocationsincludeHaiti,thePhilippines,Senegal,Brazil,Argentina,Panama)tocastoneparticularscene:awoman,usuallynaked,issittinginahotelroom,lamentingthelossofherloverwhohasreturnedtoEurope.But,witheachnewreenactmentofthescene,onebeginstoquestionsitsveracity.It’saforlornfantasy–aman’sneedtore-experienceascenehecouldonlyeverhaveimagined,atbest.(ThereareechoesofAlainResnais’searly1960sclassics,HiroshimamonamourandLastYearatMarienbad.) ThesescenesaresetagainstfootageofLethaloneinhotelrooms,ruminatingonthepitfallsandnatureofhisproject;hilariousdiscussionsofthecastingsessionswithhiscolleagues(herefusestoturnanyonedown);highlyaestheticizednudestudiesoffemalebodies;and,inonememorablemoment,aboattripuptheAmazon.
