Heaneydied,aged74,in2013.SixyearsafterhisdeathHeaney'swifeMarie,andhisthreechildrenMichael,ChristopherandCatherine,talkabouttheirfamilylifeandreadsomeofthepoemshewroteforthem,andforthefirsttimehisfoursurvivingbrothers,Hugh,Charlie,ColumandDanremembertheirchildhoodandthesharedexperiencesthatinspiredmanyofhisfinestpoems. SeamusHeaneystandsheadandshouldersabovehiscontemporaries;DeathOfANaturalist,hisfirstcollectionofpoemspublishedbyFaber&Faber(thefirstof12)in1966announcedthearrivalofamajornewtalent,andhisreputationgrewandgrewuntilhewasawardedtheNobelPrizeinLiteraturein1995. BornintoaCatholicfarmingfamilyinruralNorthernIreland,SeamusHeaney’scareercoincidedwithoneofthebloodiestpoliticalupheavalsofthe20thcentury,theTroubles,whichthreatenedtoengulfhiswork,butwhichheastutelychosetoobservefromadistance.IdentifyingasIrishratherthanBritish,HeaneymovedtoCoWicklowintheRepublicin1972andbecameanIrishcitizen. HowthefirstofninechildrenofacattledealerfromNorthernIrelandbecameoneofthefinestpoetsofhisgenerationisanastonishingstoryoftalentandperseverance.ComingfromaCatholiccommunitywhichcampaignedforcivilrights,Heaneyalwaysidentifiedwiththoseinsimilarsituations,bothinthecontemporaryworld-especiallythethenlargelycommunistEasternEurope-andinthepast.HispoemsaboutthestrangelypreservedIronAgebodiesfoundinbogsinDenmarkandIrelandsayasmuchaboutthecontemporarysituationinNorthernIrelandasabouttheworldinwhichtheywereexecutedorsacrificed. Heaney,however,neverallowedhimselftobecomeaspokesmanfortheRepublicancause,despitepressuretodosoasthesituationinNorthernIrelandbecameincreasinglyviolentandoppressive.Yethissingularbrandofhumilityandhumanityshoneapowerfullightontheatrocitiesthatweretakingplaceonbothsides,andheadvocatedamorallinethatneededtoberespectedatallcosts.
