Severallongwalksandlongconversationsformthemainbodyofthefilm.Thereal-timedramaunfoldsthedaughter'sfeelingsaboutherfather'sidea,andthenegativereactionstothisbyhermotherandothers. Byaccident,shemeetsanoutsider,Ashoke,ayoungstudentwhohasrefusedajobofferfromIndranath.Thoughnothingdevelopsbetweenthem,hispresencecoupledwiththesettingofmountainsandthefailureofhersister'smarriage,prompthertorejecttheproposedsuitor. KanchenjunghawasRay'sfirstoriginalscreenplayandforthefirsttime,hewasshootingincolor.Thefilmshowsabout100minutes(inrealtime)inthelifeofagroupofrichBengalisonvacation.UnliketheusualRayfilms,ithasafragmentednarrativewithnocentralcharacters,andnostraightnarrativeintheclassicalsense.
