Hismostimportantwork,thefirstpartofhisWWIItrilogy,Occupationin26Pictures(1978)followed.Thisdramafollowingastoryofthreeyoungmen'sfriendshipsetinWorldWarIIDubrovnikwentontowintheBigGoldenArenaforBestPictureatPulaFilmFestivalandwasahugeboxofficehitinYugoslavia.TheothertwopartsofhisWWIItrilogywereTheFallofItaly(1981)andEveningBells(1986).Inthemid1980'sheturnedtomoreintimatelovethemes,withfilmssuchasAnAngel'sBite(1984)andAloa:FestivityoftheWhores(1988).InthemeantimehealsodirectednumeroustvproductionsforRadioTelevisionBelgradeandRadioTelevisionZagreb.
