Whilstthefilmismostlyfocusedonthehat-maker,thetailoralsoplaysanimportantpartinthefilm,andCharlesAznavour(inanotherfineperformance)allowsthecharactertofunctionbrilliantlyalongsideSerrault’shat-maker.Perhapsthemostimportantroleofthetailoristoprovideakindofpsychologicalbridgewhichenablesthespectatortocrossoverintothehat-maker’sworld.TheideaofavoyeurspyingonanotherworldisadeviceChabrolhasusedanumberoftimespreviously(mosteffectivelyinhis1962filmL’Oeildumalin),buthereitiscrucialtothefilm’sdevelopment.Thetailoralsoservesasacontrastwiththehat-maker–oneiswell-manneredyetaperpetualoutsider;theotherisirritableyetanacceptedmemberofthecommunity.Althoughonemanlivesaloneandtheotherinalargefamily,bothexperienceaterriblesolitudewhichleadstheminexorablytowardsself-destruction.Thereareperhapsasmanysimilaritiesasdifferences,whichleadsustomakesomeinterestingspeculations.Couldthetailorandthehat-makerbetwofacetsofthesameindividual?Orcouldthetailormerelybeaprojectionofthehat-maker’sownconscience?OneofthemostbeautifulaspectsofChabrol’scinemaisitssubtlesenseofambiguity,whichimplies–possibly–thatnothingisquitewhatitseems.Whatyouseedependsonwhoyouareandwhereyouhappentobestanding–muchasitdoesinreallife.CanthereeverbesuchathingasanobjectiverealityinClaudeChabrol’suniverse?
