Thedramarevolvesaroundtwomen–ahat-makerandatailor–wholiveoppositeeachotherbutwhoappeartoinhabittotallydifferentworlds.Eachmanis,inhisownway,aprisonerofhisownmaking–thehat-makerisforcedtolivealoneinordertoconcealthefactthathekilledhiswife;thetailorisstifledbythelargefamilywholiveswithhiminhisconfinedhouse.Eachmansecretlyenviestheother,andsoasinisterattractionbeginstodrawthemtogether–withultimatelytragicconsequencesforbothofthem.Chabrol’smasteryofthepsychologicalthrillergenreenableshimtotellthisstoryeffectively,usingdeceptivelysimplecinematographyandsurprisinglyverylittledialogue.Towardsthatend,heisadmirablyservedbyhisleadactors,MichelSerraultandCharlesAznavour. Inacareerspanningfiftyyears,MichelSerraulthasacquiredareputationasoneofFrance’smostversatileandtalentedcharacteractors.InLesFantômesduchapelier,hegivesoneofhismostdistinctiveandmemorableperformances–indeeditcouldbesaidthatithisportrayalofthehat-makerLabbéwhichcarriesthefilmandcontributesmosttoititspoignancyandquirkycomicslant.Serraultshowsanextraordinaryabilitywhenitcomestoplayingcharacterswhoareeithermadorbad:whilsthemanagestofrighten,heisalsoabletoarousesympathy.Thisisreadilyapparentinhisperformanceofthehat-makerinthisfilm–evenwhenheismurderinghisvictims,youcannothelphavingmoresympathyforhimthanforthewomenheisdisposingof(withaneasewhichismorecomicalthanshocking).Asthefilmdevelops,wearedrawnfurtherandfurtherintothehat-maker’stroubledworld–ratherlikethetailorwhoobserveshimfromacrossthestreet–andwhatwearemoststruckbyhisnotsomuchhisdangerousinsanitybutratherhistorturedhumanity.WithoutanactorofSerrault’scalibre,itisunlikelythatChabrolcouldhaveachievedthislevelofsophisticationanddepth. Whilstthefilmismostlyfocusedonthehat-maker,thetailoralsoplaysanimportantpartinthefilm,andCharlesAznavour(inanotherfineperformance)allowsthecharactertofunctionbrilliantlyalongsideSerrault’shat-maker.Perhapsthemostimportantroleofthetailoristoprovideakindofpsychologicalbridgewhichenablesthespectatortocrossoverintothehat-maker’sworld.TheideaofavoyeurspyingonanotherworldisadeviceChabrolhasusedanumberoftimespreviously(mosteffectivelyinhis1962filmL’Oeildumalin),buthereitiscrucialtothefilm’sdevelopment.Thetailoralsoservesasacontrastwiththehat-maker–oneiswell-manneredyetaperpetualoutsider;theotherisirritableyetanacceptedmemberofthecommunity.Althoughonemanlivesaloneandtheotherinalargefamily,bothexperienceaterriblesolitudewhichleadstheminexorablytowardsself-destruction.Thereareperhapsasmanysimilaritiesasdifferences,whichleadsustomakesomeinterestingspeculations.Couldthetailorandthehat-makerbetwofacetsofthesameindividual?Orcouldthetailormerelybeaprojectionofthehat-maker’sownconscience?OneofthemostbeautifulaspectsofChabrol’scinemaisitssubtlesenseofambiguity,whichimplies–possibly–thatnothingisquitewhatitseems.Whatyouseedependsonwhoyouareandwhereyouhappentobestanding–muchasitdoesinreallife.CanthereeverbesuchathingasanobjectiverealityinClaudeChabrol’suniverse? ComparedwithsomeofChabrol’sotherthrillers,LesFantômesduchapeliermustappearstrangelyminimalist.Itiscertainlysparseondialogueandthefilm’sdramaticmomentsareheavilydownplayed.Chabrol’sintentionisnottocreateasuspensethriller–thatmuchisevident.Instead,whatheoffersisapalpablychillingstudyofamanwhoisdriven–perhapsbythenoblestofmotives–tomurderhiscrippledwifeandwho–alone,afraidandguilt-stricken–isdrawnfurtherandfurtherintoinsanity.Bykeepingthetraditionalthrillerelementstotheminimumandbyleavingittothecameraandsettingtosayfarmorethanhisactors,Chabrolmanagestoconstructoneofhismosttragicallypoignantportraitsofhumanfallibility.
