  • Evenonaglobalscale,itisveryrarethatthesameauthorcr… Evenonaglobalscale,itisveryrarethatthesameauthorcreatesoutstandingworksinbothfeatureandanimatedfilms.AlongwithWalerianBorowczyk,VatroslavMimicaisperhapsonesuchfamouscase.MimicastudiedattheUniversityofMedicineinZagreb,foughtinWWIIasaPartisan,andenteredtheworldoffilmasageneral,laterbecomingCreativeDirectorofJadranFilm.Hequicklydevotedhimselftofilmdirecting,havingmadehisdebutin1952withthecriminalmelodramaUoluji.AftertheblackcomedyJubilejgospodinaIkla(1955),hebecamemoreinterestedinanimatedfilms.TogetherwithDusanVukotic,NikolaKostelacandVladoKristl,hebecamethekeyfigureofthefirstgenerationoftheZagrebschoolofanimatedfilm,andhisanimatedfilmsSamac(1958),Inspektorsevratiokuci(1959)andMalakronika(1962)representanunavoidablepointinanyhistoryofanimatedfilm.Hisexquisitemodernistself-confidenceandlucidityweredemonstratedinthecreationofhisanimatedfilms.Thethemeofalienationinthedehumanizedlandscapeofmoderncivilizationwasalsocharacteristicofhislaterfilmsinthesecondpartofhisfeaturefilmsopus.ThemodernisttrilogyPrometejsotokaVisevice(1964),Ponedjeljakiliutorak(1966)andKaja,ubitcute!(1967),bearstestimonytohisfascinationwiththesethemes.Inhislaterfilms,amongwhichDogadlaj(1969),basedonashortstorybyChekhov,isthemostintriguing,hegaveuponthetransparentpoeticsofmodernism,findinghimselfmoreinterestedinthehistoricalgenre(Seljackabuna1573,BanovicStrahinja).VatroslavMimicawasthefirstconsistentmodernistofCroatianandYugoslavianfilm,andoneofthoseauthorswhobroughttoCroatian(andYugoslavianatthattime)filmtopics,filmforms,andacreativeambitionthatwererelevantthroughouttheworld.
