Lakshmiworkedinmyhomeforaboutanhoureveryday.Shehadafewotherjobsofthissort,allinapartmentsintheresidentialcolonywhereIlive.OvertimeIgraduallycametoknowmoreaboutherfamilyandcircumstances.Shehadbeenworkingsincetheageof10.Shecamefromafamilyoftenchildren—eightgirlsandtwoboys.Themotherhaddiedveryyoung,leavingtheyoungestchildrentobetakencareofbytheolderonesandbytheirfather,analcoholic.Thefamilylivedtogetherintwocrampedroomsinabasti.Twoofhersisters,abrother,andsometimesherfathertoo,workedasgarbagecollectorsinmyneighbourhood. Lakshmihadstarteddoingdomesticworkafterdroppingoutofschool.Agirlsointelligentnotabletocopewithherstudieswassurprising.Butherilliteracybotheredmemorethanitbotheredher.Shedidn’tseemhandicappedbyit.Shewasthe‘man’ofthehouse,andinfactwasveryefficientinherdealingswithshopkeepers,policemen,municipalclerks.Ithoughtsometimesaboutthetrajectoriesofourlives—twowomen,bothstrugglingtogetafootholdinBombay.Thecitythatforcesustobecomehustlersatmanylevels.Butofcoursemyeducationgavemeanadvantage,andakindoffreedomthatwasbeyondherreach. MyrelationshipwithLakshmiwasfriendly,evenwarm,buttherewasnodenyingthesocialandeconomicdivide.Weinhabitedveryseparateworlds.Itraveledalotbecauseofmywork,sometimesabroadbutshehadnotevenseendowntownBombay.ApartfromtherarevisittohernativevillageinsouthIndiaherlifewasconfinedtoherbastiandmyhousingcolonytwokilometersaway. Lakshmiseemedtobeacceptingofherlot.Shewascompletelywithoutbitterness,andyetshewasnotatallservileorobsequious.Ioftenwonderedatherlackofresentment,andalsoathowsuchgreatdisparitycouldbesowidelyacceptedbymillions. AsIbegantolookatourequation,Ibegantolookmorecloselyatmyself,andatLakshmi.Shehadjustturned20.Butherearlierbrightnesswasgone.Ifthiswasherlifeat20,whatwouldherfuturebelike?IbegantofeelitwouldbeinterestingtomakeafilmaboutLakshmi–todocumentherlifeandstrugglesoverthenextfewyears. AtfirstIwasonlythinkingaboutherasthesubjectofthefilm.Butslowlymyinterestinhermademestartthinkingaboutrelationshipsbetweenemployersanddomesticworkers.‘Servants’arearoundusallthetimeandyet,inasense,invisible.AllofusmiddleclassIndianshavegrownuptakingtheirpresenceandtheirservicesforgranted.Withoutthinkingtwice,weusethewords‘servant’and‘maid’,ortheirequivalentsineachlanguage.Everybodyalwayscomplainsabouthowlazy,dirty,insolent,stupid,orunreliabletheirservantsare.InmostIndianhomes,servantsmaynoteatthesamefoodastheiremployers,muchlesssitontheirsofasorattheirtables.Theydoback-breakinglabourandareroutinelymadetodoextrachoresfornoextrapay.Theirearningsarepaltry,withnounionstodeterminefairpayorlawstoenforceminimumwages.Theydonotevenhaveweeklyoffs,yetiftheyfailtoshowupforworkduetoillhealthorotherreasons,theyareberated;whentheyaskforleave,theyareinterrogatedcloselywithoutrespectfortheirprivacy.That’showitis,moreoftenthannot. Mostemployers,knowinglyorinadvertently,tendtotreatdomesticworkersasiftheyareinferiororlessentitledbeings.Someofushavequestionedthisattitudeinourselves,andhaveconsciouslylearnedtobemoredemocratic,butclassnotionsaredeeplyrootedinourcultureandingrainedinallofus.It’scommonenoughtocomeacrossaliberalpersonexpoundingpassionatesocialisticviewsbutcompletelyoblivioustohis/herunderpaidservantworkinginthesameroomorsweepingunderfoot.Thatliberalcouldaswellbeme! ThisiswhenIdecidedtochangethefocusofthefilmto‘ourrelationship’.Afilmnotjustaboutmymaidbutaboutus.And,intheprocess,exploreourrelationshipwitheachotherandreflectonthewholegamutofattitudesandissuesbetweenservantsandemployers.Iwasinterestedinseeinghowshenegotiatestwodifferentkindsofspaces—herhomewheresheseemstobetheboss,andotherhouseholdswhereshewasthemaid. IaskedherifIcouldfilmherandtomysurprisesheagreed.Ishotwithherforafewdays.Shethoughtitwasdone.AfterallIhadinterviewedatherlengthandfilmedheratwork.Shewassurprisedwhensherealisedthatitwouldbealongerproject.Butsoonaftershestartedgettingirregularwithhertimings.Shewasforgetful,andoftenlookedtired.WhenItalkedtoher,Irealizedshewasoverworked.Shehadtakenonseventoeighthouseholds,workingalmost14hoursdaily.Iaskedherhowmuchsheearnedfromitall,anditworkedouttoasumthat,togetherwithhersiblings’erraticearnings,wasnotenoughtofeedthefamily.Shewasconstantlyindebt,borrowingmoneyfromheremployers.Andthenshefellill. Ibeganfilmingwithhermoreintensely.Andthusbegantheprocessthatlastedtwoyearsandisstillcontinuinginaway. Iwantedtomaketransparenttheveryprocessofmakingthisfilm—theproblemsinherentinfilmingoneselfandone’srelationships.Whatismyrelationshipwithmymaid?HowdoIbringmyselfintothefilm?Whatdoesthepresenceofanothercameraandcamerapersondotoourexchanges? Then,howdoyougetbeyondrole-playing?IwastakenabackbyLakshmi’seaseoncamera.Shewouldneverstealaglanceatthecamera—shebehavedasifitdidn’texist.Iwonderedifshewouldalsoknowtherightthingstosay.Andinsomeofthefilming,shedidbegintogivemealmosttoo-perfectsoundbytes—beitaboutherrottenfateorherfather’sdrinking. Also,howwouldtheprocessoffilmingaffectourrelationship?Thoughmyattemptwastobridgedistancesandseeifwecouldbeequals,coulditendupdoingtheopposite—makinghermorevulnerable?Afteralltherewasadoublehierarchyatworkhere—notonlyofemployerandemployee,butalsotheinevitablepowerequationbetweenwho’sbehindthecameraandwho’sbeforeit.Thereweredayswhenshewasbubblyandcooperative;dayswhenshewasmoody,almostsullen.InawayIlikeditthatIwasn’talwayssureofmygroundwithher.Atlhoughitmademytaskasafilmmakertougher,Iwasgladshewasabletoassertherself,sometimessilently,sometimeseventellingmenottofilm. Andwhataboutme?HowmuchwouldIreallybewillingtosharewithher?Ioftenwentfromthinkingwewerebecomingfriendstowonderingifourworlds,andworldviews,couldeverreallymeet…
