NoSerDiosYCuidarlosliterallymeansDon’tBeGod,ButCareForThem,andbrimswithalitanyofpersonalinterviewswithprisoners,UBAprofessors,judicialauthorities,legislatorsandpenitentiaryofficials.Viewerscomeface-to-facewithcandidtestimoniesliketheonegivenbyabusinessschoolstudentnamedDaniel.“TheCUDisachancetodosomethinggoodwithyourlife,”hesays.“It’sachanceforabetterfutureforyourwifeandchildren,especiallyafteryou’vehurtthemsomuch.”AlawschoolstudentnamedJorgelina,lockedupforsellingdrugs,deliversakeeninsightintoprisoners’rights:“Somepeoplemaywonderwhetherwehavetherighttostudy,”shesays.“Nothingisfreehere.Wedon’tpaywithmoney,wepaywithotherthings.Comingheretostudy,gettingupeverymorningtocomehereandputyourbestfootforwardandgivingthebestofyourself—that’snotfree.” OnelawstudentnamedAdolfo,whofinishedhisstudiesafterbeingreleased,seestheCUDasmuchmorethanjustaneducationalprogram.“Thetruthis,IwenttojailbecauseIwasdesperate,”herecalls.“Iwasintheincomer’sward,itwassummer,andabout10or15daysafterIwasputinjail,IlookedoutthewardwindowandIsawsomeoftheguys.Iaskedwhattheyweredoing,andtheytoldmethattheywereintheCUD.AndIasked,‘What’sthat?’Andtheysaid,‘That’stheplacetostudy.’TheCUDsavedmylife.”
