MessiahisprobablyclosesttoRussell’seffortvisually.Theperformanceisexcellent,andwedogettoseetheperformershereandtherethruthepresentation,sometimesinextremecloseupsastheydeclaimthedramatictextsofHandel’swork.ThoughperformancesofMessiahareoftengivenatChristmastimeandrecordingsoftheentireworksellwellinthisseason,Idon’tbelievethisDVDwouldbeanappropriategiftfor,say,thatdevoutelderlyauntofyours.Handel’sstoryofthenativity,passionandresurrectionofJesusisillustratedonthescreenwithjustasmanyprofaneimagesassacredones.Infact,manyofthereligiousimagesmightbeconstruedascommentinginanegativefashionontheactivitiesrecorded.TheseincludeTVevangelists,massprayermeetings,groupbaptisms,costumedreligiousmarchesinthesouthofSpain,anamateurstagingofChrist’spassion,blackchurches,etc.AnicetouchistheoccasionalcuttingawayfromHandel’smusictoanumberfromachoiridentifiedwithcaptionsasbeingareformedaddictsgroup,oragay&lesbianchoir. Lessunderstandablearesomeoftheoff-the-wallimagechoices,suchastheextensivecoverageofHouston’sannual“HairBall,”inwhicheveryonedressesupinLouisXIV-lookingoutfitswithgiantwigs.Therearealsosomedisturbingshotsofprisonersinsomesortofwarbeingbeatenandworse.(KenRussell’sclipschosenfor“Mars”inthePlanetsweresimilarbutnotnearlysopainful.)IrealizeLasVegasprovideswonderfulvisualfoddertoillustrateawholeworldofphilosophicalpoints.(AsamatteroffactIstillhaveaSuper8reelofsuchfootageIhadonceintendedtouseinanexperimentalfilmtitled“Ersatz/Real.”)ButKleinfallsbackonLVblingtoomuch,especiallyinthefirstsectionsofthefilm.Forexample,heusesshotsofpeoplewinningjackpotsattheslotmachinestoaccompanyHandel’stextabout“goodtidings.” Theperformanceandsurroundsonicsarefirstrate.Ihadsomeconcernabouthowthewordswouldbehandled-thereisnobookletprovided.Theyareemblazonedonthescreeninbigblocklettersatthestartofmostsections,insyncwiththemusic-evengettinglargerasthevolumeincreases.IprobablywouldnothavelistenedtoallofMessiahthisseason,butnowthatIhaveImustsayIneverdozedaminute!AndmygoodimpressionofHandel’smasterpieceismaintained.Butcan’tsaythesameforKlein’sfilm. 详情
