  • At4a.m.onAug.22,1971,eightanti-VietnamWarprotestor… At4a.m.onAug.22,1971,eightanti-VietnamWarprotestorswentupaladderoutsidethefederalbuildinginCamden,N.J.,andbrokeintotheofficesofthelocaldraftboard.Fortwohours,theyshreddedSelectiveServicerecordsbeforetheyweresurprisedbyFBIagents.Twentyco-conspiratorswerealsosoonarrestedandin1973the"Camden28,"eachfacingsentencesof47yearsonsevenfelonycounts,wentontrial.Howandwhydidtheseindividuals,includingfourCatholicpriestsandaProtestantminister,intentionallyplacedthemselvesatriskofarrestandimprisonmentwhileprotestingthewarinVietnam.Theactivistsclaimedthattheircivildisobediencewasmeanttocallattentiontotheirbeliefthatkilling--eveninwar--wasmorallyindefensible.From1967to1971,similarbreak-inshadoccurredatnumerousdraftboardsthroughoutthecountry,butthe63-daytrialoftheCamden28,whichreceivednationalmediaattention,wastheonlyonewhichsawthedefendantsacquitted.
