Therearesomeincrediblystrikingtableauxthatrequiretheviewerstocreateastructureforthemselves(suchastheBolsheviksoldierdirectinghisownexecution)althoughtheclimaxdoesdrawtheprecedingeventstogether,combiningthedialecticalthreadsofmodernindustryandtheoldman'smythtogetherintwoexhilaratingscenes. Thecinematographyisfascinating-elementsofthestyleofEisenstein,Pudovkin,ProtazanovandKuleshovarerecognisable,yetZvenigoraseemscompletelydifferenttoanyofthem.Thejuxtapositionofrapidmontages,swiftcitytoursandslow,poeticjourneysaroundthecountrysideispowerful,andthemythicalscenes,althoughwinding,arebeautifullyrealisedwithadreamlikequalitytothem.
