Thiseditionpresentsthefilm,forthefirsttimeonDVD,intwoversions:theprintpreservedintheformerSovietUnion'sGosfilmofondaswellasPeterKubelka'sfascinatingrestorationwhich-byre-syncingtheimageandsound-allowstheviewertoexperiencewhatVertovconsideredthenewlanguageofsoundcinema.InRestoringEntuziazm,PeterKubelka-filmmakerandco-founderoftheAustrianFilmMuseum-demonstratestheprinciplesofhisrestorationworkunddiscussesVertov'sconceptsofcinema.TheExtrassectionpresentstwomoreraredocumentsfromtheAustrianFilmMuseum'sVertovcollection. Enthusiasm:SymphonyoftheDonbas,Vertov'spaeantotheSovietfirstFive-YearPlanforeconomicdevelopment(1928-32),clearlyhasa"three-movement"form.Beginningwithanovertureontheeliminationofalltheolddetritusimpedingfullsocialistconstruction(particularlyreligionandalcoholism),thefilmmovesintoamiddlesectionthatpassesthroughmanyofthestagesofheavyindustrialproductiontoculminateinafinalmovement,wheretheproductsofindustrializationflowbacktotheUSSR(mostnotablytothecountryside)andarecelebrated. ThefilmisclassiclyVertovianinitsreflectionuponitsownconstructednature.LikeManwithaMovieCamera,Enthusiasmseemstobegintwice:themusicwehear(andwatch)beingheardinthefilm'sfirstshotislaterrepeated,withthewomanauditorreplacedbyamaleconductorinaradiostudio.Theproduction,transmission,organizationandauditionofsoundenterourownconsciousreceptionofthefilm.ThusEnthisiasmisathree-levelledfilm,withtheaudience'sauditoryexperience,thefilmasasound-imageconstruct,andthedocumentarycharacterofthefilm'sbasicmaterialsallco-presentandwoventogetheraspartofareflexivetextureremarkableatthisearlydateinthehistoryofsoundfilm,andinspirationalformanylaterexperimenters,includingPeterKubelkaandRichardSerra.
