Thecameraisnotkindtothissortoftheatricalenterprise.Thechorusofmiddle-aged,middle-classharpies,whorepeatedlycryout''JesusChrist,myfeethurt,''evokenotanelevatedkindoflunacybutappeartobe,underthecamera'sclosescrutiny,simplyagroupofactressesbehavingpeculiarly.It'sdifficulttorespondtoRhoda'shighanxieties,becauseoneisalwaysconsciousoftheplacementoftheperformers,theirrelationtothecamera,theirmakeup,theircarefullychoreographedmovementsandanumberofnotso-startlingjuxtapositionsofbizarreimagesandsounds.SomethingobviouslyisgoingoninMr.Foreman'smind,butthefilmstandslikeaninvisibleshieldbetweentheeventandtheaudience.
