TheconcerthaslongsincegoneontolegendarystatusinthehistoryofLondon's1960sundergroundmovement.Moreimportanttomodern-daystudentsofthatera,however,istheinvolvementofPinkFloyd. Atthetime,"theFloyd,"astheywerethenoftenreferredto,weretheunofficial"houseband"ofLondon'sunderground.AlthoughthenPinkFloydbandleaderSydBarrett'smentalhealthwasalreadyonafastroadtodeteriorationasaresultofonetoomanyacidtrips,theywerealsothemainattractionatthelegendarygigthatwasthe14-hourTechnicolorDream. So,inmanyways,thisfilmisasmuchPinkFloyd'sstory(atleastintheirearlyformativeyears)asitisachronologyofthatsingularevent—legendaryasitwas. Throughinterviewswithkeyplayers—includingPinkFloydmembersRogerWatersandNickMason,aswellaskeyscenesterslikeBarryMilesandJohn"Hoppy"Hopkins—ATechnicolorDreamrecallstheformativeyearsofLondon'sfledglingunderground. Thefilmfollowseventsasthemovementgrewfromacouplehundredlike-minded"freaks",toaforcewhichtheBritishgovernmentitselfwouldeventuallyviewasathreat—inmanywaysmirroringwhatwashappeninginAmericancitieslikeNewYork,L.A.,andespeciallySanFranciscoatthesametime. AsBarryMilesorganizedamassiveLondon"beatsummit"attheRoyalAlbertHallfeaturingpoetslikeAllenGinsburg,and"Hoppy"HopkinswaspublishingtheearliestissuesoftheInternationalTimes,agroupcalledthePinkFloyd,ledbyaniconoclasticgeniusnamedSydBarrett—knownforthingslikerunningsteelballbearingsacrossthestringsofhisguitar—werealsomakinganameforthemselvesintheunderground. SowhenHopkinsundergroundpapertheI.T.waseventuallyraidedbytheLondoncops—ostensiblybecauseofpublishing"obscene"material—itmadeperfectsenseforthemediavoiceofLondon'sartisticandpoliticalundergroundtoteamupwiththebandprovidingitssoundtrack—PinkFloyd. PinkFloydwasalreadygarneringattentionwiththeirwildlyexperimental"multi-media"showsattheUFOclub,providingfinancialsupportforI.T.,whileatthesametimedevelopingareputationforthemselvesasmusicalinnovators.SoitwasonlynaturalwhenHopkinsturnedtoPinkFloydtoheadlinetheTechnicolorDream,wherebyallaccountstheyplayedtoapackedhouseofstonedattendees,includingJohnLennon,asthesuncameupbehindthemthroughstainedglasswindows.
