  • ConsideringallthecriticalattentionHowardHawkshasre… ConsideringallthecriticalattentionHowardHawkshasreceivedovertheyearsit'srathersurprisingthatthisfilm,thesixthhedirected,issolittleknown.Admittedly,FAZILisnotatalltypicalofHawks'workandlacksmostofhisrecognizabledirectorialmotifs,andontopofthatfeaturesstarswhosenamesonlybuffswillrecognize,butit'sabeautifullyfilmed,sumptuouslymountedlatesilentdramathat'sworthseeingforitsproductionvaluesalone.ForviewersofourerathemoststrikingaspectofthefilmisthatitsstoryisbasedonacultureclashofWestvs.East,specifically,thedifficultiesthatarisewhenaEuropean(presumablysecular)womanwhopridesherselfonbeing"free"andmodernmarriesanArabmanwhofollowstheoldwaysandisadevoutMuslim.ThismaterialliesinadangerzonethatHollywoodhasrarelyventuredinto,eveninrecentyears,andwhiletooureyesFAZILisquitedatedandverymuchaproductofitstimeinitsdepictionofArabicculture,it'snonethelesssurprisinglyeven-handedinpresentingbothsidesofthecaseinapainfuldividethat,needlesstosay,isstillwithus. TwothingsmakeFAZILdistinctlyun-Hawksianincomparisonwithmostofthedirector'slaterwork:theemphasisisonthecentralromancethroughout,withonlyverybriefactionsequences,andtheendingistragic.OnceourloversmeetinVenicewearegivenmanylong,languidclose-upsofFazil(CharlesFarrell)exchanginglooksofadorationwithFabienne(GretaNissen).Theyfallinloveatadance--ahintoftragicforeshadowingforShakespearedevotees--andthenshareagondolaridewhilethegondoliersingsthefilm'stheme,"NightsofSplendor,"courtesyofthefilm'spre-recordedFoxMovietonescore.Butalmostassoonastheyaremarriedthecultureclashbegins,andwenevergetasensethatthetwowillmanagetoovercometheirdifferences:theyhaveentirelyoppositenotionsofwhatmarriageissupposedtobe.Fazilbelievesthatloveispossession,thatahusbandcommandshiswife,andhehasnointentionofadaptingtoWesterncustoms,whileFabienne,whoisFrench,considersherselfaliberatedwomanandchafesunderFazil'spossessiveness.Neitherwillcompromise.Soonit'sclearthattragedyliesahead,andit'sjustaquestionofwhatexactlyisgoingtohappenandwhen. HoweverdaringitmayhavebeenforHollywoodtotacklethissubjectmatterin1928theprospectofanactualArabactortakingthetitlerolewasapparentlyoutofthequestion,sohandsomeyoungCharlesFarrellwascastinthelead.Theygavehimapencil-linemustacheanddarkenedhisskinslightly,andthatwasconsideredsufficient.Farrellgivestherolehisbestshotalthoughhe'sobviouslynomoreArabthanBarryFitzgerald.Hisperformanceisgenerallyrestrainedandseemstoimproveasthefilmgoeson,thatis,afteranearlysceneinwhichheindulgesinunfortunateeye-poppinghistrionicswhenhefirstseeshisleadinglady.ThebeautifulGretaNissen,whowasNorwegian,mightnothavegottenthisroleinatalkiebutshe'sperfectlywellcasthere,andgivesasensitive,nuancedperformance.BothFabienneandFazilhavetheirfaultsbutneitherispresentedasthevillainofthepiece,whichisrefreshingbutalsodeepensoursadnessandfrustrationastheirrelationshipfallsapart. Thisfilmisn'tforalltastes,andHowardHawksfansfamiliarwithhislaterworkmaywonderifitwastrulydirectedbythesameguywhomadeTHEBIGSLEEPandRIOBRAVO,butforviewerswillingtoadjusttoamoreromantic(even"soapy")sensibilitythisisamoviewellworthseeing,especiallyforthoseinterestedinthecultureclashissuesattheheartofthestory,andinthewayHollywoodhasportrayedtheArabworld.Filmbuffsinterestedinthelatesilenterawillmostdefinitelywanttogivethisonealook. FAZILisaslowpacedfilmaboutanArabprincefallinginlovewithaFrenchblondebombshell.TheculturedifferencebetweenmodernParisandtheoldcultureoftheprimitivehotdesertmakesmarriagelifedifficultforthecharactersplayedbyCharlesFarrellandNorwegianblondeGretaNissen.FAZILwasdistributedasthesounderawasbreakingitssilenceandthefilmseemsabitoldfashionforitstime.ButFazilhassomebeautifulcloseupsofitsstarsandthemusicthroughoutismoody.WorthseeingforHowardHawksdirectionandaglimpseofNissensbeauty.ApparentlyHawkshadproblemsconvincingFarrellandNissentomaketheirlovescenesmoresteamy.Sohetokethembothasideandtoldthemseparatelytogetbusy.Theadvicepaidoff.NextprojectforGretaNissenwasasleadingladyinHowardHughsHELLSANGELSwhichfirstwasfilmedasasilent.Hedecidedtore-shootthedialogwithsoundbutNissensheavyNorwegianaccentdidnotfittheroleasanEnglishLady.ShewasreplacedbynewcomerJeanHarlow.FAZILwasthoughtlost,buthassurfacedandbecomeindemandatvariousfilmfestivals.
