TwothingsmakeFAZILdistinctlyun-Hawksianincomparisonwithmostofthedirector'slaterwork:theemphasisisonthecentralromancethroughout,withonlyverybriefactionsequences,andtheendingistragic.OnceourloversmeetinVenicewearegivenmanylong,languidclose-upsofFazil(CharlesFarrell)exchanginglooksofadorationwithFabienne(GretaNissen).Theyfallinloveatadance--ahintoftragicforeshadowingforShakespearedevotees--andthenshareagondolaridewhilethegondoliersingsthefilm'stheme,"NightsofSplendor,"courtesyofthefilm'spre-recordedFoxMovietonescore.Butalmostassoonastheyaremarriedthecultureclashbegins,andwenevergetasensethatthetwowillmanagetoovercometheirdifferences:theyhaveentirelyoppositenotionsofwhatmarriageissupposedtobe.Fazilbelievesthatloveispossession,thatahusbandcommandshiswife,andhehasnointentionofadaptingtoWesterncustoms,whileFabienne,whoisFrench,considersherselfaliberatedwomanandchafesunderFazil'spossessiveness.Neitherwillcompromise.Soonit'sclearthattragedyliesahead,andit'sjustaquestionofwhatexactlyisgoingtohappenandwhen.
