"Weprobablyspendmoretimetogetherthanwithourfamilies,"oneofthemobservesnearthebeginningofthemovie.Andwhenevertheyaretogether,exceptintheartificiallypoliteatmosphereofaperformancebeforeanaudience,themembersoftheGuarneriQuartetarearguingaboutsomething,oftentellingoneanotherhowbadtheysound,sometimesevenarguingaboutwhoshouldplaywhatpart. Inrehearsal,theyargueabouttempo,accentsandphrasing,tossingafour-letterwordbackandforthlikearecurringmelodicmotif;ontour,theyargueaboutwhetheragivenconcerthalliscomfortable;inhotels,theyaskforroomsondifferentfloors;inagondolaontheGrandCanalinVenice,twoofthemargueabouttheNewYorkMetswhileathirdarguesaboutthesubjectstheychooseforgondolaconversationandthefourthretreatsintomoodysilence. TheGuarneri'srehearsalargumentsareparticularlyeloquentbecause,whenwordsfailthem,theybeginarguingwiththeirinstruments,makingsoundsmoreeloquent(oratleastlouder,fasterandmorerhythmicallyvivid)thananyavailabletoamerehumanvoice.Watchingthemrehearseisauniquemusicalandpsychologicalexperience.ItisoftenavailableattheUniversityofMaryland,wheretheyareartistsinresidence--infact,performingtonight--but"HighFidelity"makesitavailabletotherestoftheworld.
