OstensiblyinchargeistheCaptain,whosebodyhasbeenpartiallyreplacedwithroboticpartsfollowinganear-fatalcrash,butheismerelyapuppetcontrolledbyhisnurse-aprojectionofZanak'soriginalruler,theagedQueenXanxia. Xanxiaisusingtimedams,poweredbytheforcesgeneratedinthetrophyroom,tokeepherbodyaliveuntilthisnew,youngerformhasstabilised.TheCaptainpreparesZanakto'jump'again-thistimewithEarthasitstarget. TheDoctorattemptstothwarthisplans,callingontheassistanceoftheMentiads-agestaltoftelepathsamongstZanak'sindigenouspopulation-tosabotagetheengines. TheCaptainrebelsagainstthenurse,butshekillshim.ThenurseherselfisthendestroyedbyoneoftheZanaknativeswhomtheDoctor,RomanaandK9havebefriended.
