Rootedinoralstorytellingandembodiedbyfemaleshamans,themythaboutBariandherabandonmentatbirthforbeingbornagirlhasbeenmainlyunderstoodasastoryoffilialpiety.However,Kaisenframesthemythasaninitialstoryofgendertransgressionthattranscendsdivisionlogicsbuthastheexperienceofotheringandlossatitscore.Accordingtothemyth,Bariregainsthecommunity’sacceptanceafterrevivingthedeadandisofferedhalftheKingdom.Yet,theheroinerefusestoabidebyhumanbordersandchoosesinsteadtobecomethegoddesswhomediatesatthethresholdofthelivingandthedead.ThisiswhatdistinguishesthemythoftheabandonedfromotherKoreanmythsaboutwomen. CommunityofPartingderivesfromKaisen’sextensiveresearchintoKoreanshamanismsince2011andherlong-termengagementwithcommunitieseffectedbywaranddivision.ThepieceiscomposedofimageryfilmedinlocationssuchasJejuIsland,theDMZ,SouthKorea,NorthKorea,Kazakhstan,Japan,China,theUnitedStates,andGermany.Combiningshamanicritualperformances,nature-andcityscapes,archivalmaterial,aerialimagery,poetry,voiceover,andsoundscapes,thepieceisconfiguredasamulti-scalar,non-linear,andlayeredmontagelooselyframedaroundBari’smultipledeaths. Bothinter-subjectiveanddeeplypersonal,Kaisentreatsthemythoftheabandonedasagenderedtaleofmigration,marginalization,andresiliencetoldfromamulti-vocalsite.Intheshamanicritualtheshamanabandonsherselftomediateandgathersanassemblyoftheliving,thedead,andmultiplespiritswitnesses.Inasimilarvein,aCommunityofPartingisformedinthepiecearoundthesharedsentimentoftheabandoned:RitualperformancesandchantsbyshamanKohSunahn,asurvivorofthe1948JejuMassacreinSouthKoreaconstitutesarecurringrhythmandculminatesinaritualforthedeadthatinvolvestheartist.ThemythisalsoreflectedinthepoetryofSwedishpoetMaraLeeandinthepoeticsofKimHyesoonfromwhosebook‘Woman,IDoPoetry’thetranslatedtitleCommunityofPartingderives.ItfurtherresonatesinvariousnarrativesbySouthKorean,NorthKorean,anddiasporicwomenwhonegotiatehowgenderbiasalongwithcolonialism,modernity,andwarhaveresultedinradicalruptureswhileunfinishedhistoriescontinuetolinger. Infusedbytheliving,thedead,andthoseyettocome,CommunityofPartingisactualizedthroughaprocessofdissolution,revival,andbecoming.Informedbyshamanicpractice,propertiesintegraltothefilmicmediumareemployedtocontestanddiffusespatiotemporalboundariesandhierarchiesofknowledgeandbeing.Doingso,CommunityofPartingproposesotherwaysofthinkingandbeingwithothers,includingtherelationshiptonatureandotherlife-forms.
