LatviannewGothiconthe(un)avoidabilityofdeathandendings.Maskalāns(cinematographerofthegrotesqueDreamland(2004)whichwasnominatedforthebestdocumentaryattheEuropeanFilmAwards)isoneofthemostdistinguishednaturedocumentariansandobserversintheBaltics,andinhislatestworkprovokestheviewerbothwithhisimageryandexistentialandethicalquestions.Inthissensoryandcarnalmetamorphosisdetectivestorytheviewerseesthepartoflifethatislessvisibleoracknowledged,oritgetsretouched–death,whichoccasionallyopensupararecinematicexperienceoutsidethecomfortzone.Withendingsandnature’s“redintoothandclaw”nothingcomestoanend–andthatisexactlywherethisfilmbegins.
