Naturally,beingmadein1938,thefilmisinblackandwhite,althoughthestoryissocolourfulandvibrant,withcharacterssoalive,youwouldbeforgivenforthinkingthefilmwasmademuchlater.Itdefinitelydoesnotfeelalmost65yearsold. AlekseiLyarsky,whoplaysGorky,isinstantlylikeableastheyoungprotagonist.Capableofportrayingemotionsfarbeyondhisyears,heworkssuperblyalongsideacastofcommandingandbelievableproportion.ThereisanalmostDickensianfeeltosomeofthecharacters.Whiledesperatelysad,andeasytosympathisewith,theGrandfatherhasanineffablequality,bothhumorousandselfpitying.Instarkcontrast,Maxim'sGrandmotherisasimplewoman,oneofgoodnessandtruth,representingallthatisbeautifulintheoptimismofthepovertyinwhichtheylive.
