OneonlyhastocompareKenLoach'sLadybird,LadybirdwithLeigh'sHomeSweetHomeorhisshort,Probation,forthedifferencebetweenthetwoviewpointstobeclear.WhereasLoachmountsaninstitutionalcritique,thesocialsystemsandbureaucraciesinLeigh'sworkareonlyindividualswritlarge.HomeSweetHomedramatizestherelationshipoftwosocialworkers,DaveandMelody,toaclient,Stan,andhisdaughterTina,butforLeighthesocialworkersareultimatelyjustmessed-uppeople.OnemightsaythatwhileLoachlooksattheeffect,Leighstudiesthecause.Loachstudiesbureaucracies;Leighexaminestheindividualqualitiesthatmakebureaucraciesthewaytheyare.ThemaincharactersinLadybird,Ladybirdarevictimsofasocialagency'sdepersonalizingunderstandings.LeighrefusestomakeStanandTinavictimsofanybodyoranything.HomeSweetHomemakesclearthat,evenifallofthesocialworkersweretodisappearfromtheuniverse,StanandTina'srelationshipwouldnotimproveonewhit(andinfactwouldverylikelygetworse,sinceintheabsenceofapushy,intrusive,boorishMelody,Tinawouldgetnovisitsortripshomeatall).
