Thisdocumentary’smajorstrengthisthatitisabitofeverything—partbiography,partliterarycriticism,parthero-worship,partbookreading,andpartpsychology.Thesubtitle“MirrorMan”isareferencetothefrequentoccurrenceofmirrorsinhisworks.OneofthemostinterestingsubjectsinthisvideoisadiscussionofBorges’sfascinationwithandfearofmirrorsduringhisformativeyears,andhowthesefearsaremanifestedinhiswritings.  Archivalfootagegivesaflavorofthesignificanthistoriceventsin20thcenturyArgentinaandtheirinfluencesonBorgesfromchildhooduntilhisdeathin1986.StillphotographsfromavarietyofrepositoriesandpersonalcollectionsbringtolifetheyoungBorges,whobeganwritingseriouslyattheveryearlyageof9.Thefilmmaker,PhilippeMolins,alsomakesuseofdramaticreenactmentsshowingBorgesasachildandyoungadult.Additionally,archivalinterviewswithBorgesandwithsignificantothers,includinghissecondwife,Mar’aKodamaBorges,hismother,LeonorAcevedodeBorges,andfriendandauthor-collaboratorAdolfoBioyCasares,provideimportantinsightsintothelifeandliteratureofBorgesinhismiddle-andlater-years.Theinterviewswithhissecondwifeandmotherarethemostcaptivatingsequencesinthevideo.Finally,atappropriatetimesinthevideo,therearebriefreadingsfrombothwellknownandlesser-knownworks.  Thedocumentary’stechnicalqualitiesaresuperb,particularlybecauseofthedifficultiesinvolvedinincorporatingsomanydifferenttechniquesintheproduction.Thisreviewerwasespeciallyimpressedwiththeaudio,whichcomplementthevisualaspectsverywell.Thefemalenarrator’svoiceisstrongandmelodious;themale’svoiceusedintheselectedreadingsofliteraryworksisdeepandpleasantlyresonant.ThevideoismostlyinEnglish;whentheintervieweesspeakinSpanish,thereisanEnglishvoiceover.
