MotorsportjournalistNigelRoebucklaterwrotethatthe1982seasonwas"anuglyyear,pock-markedbytragedy,bydissension,bygreed,andyet,paradoxically,itproducedsomeofthemostmemorableracingeverseen".Itstartedwithadrivers'strikeattheseasonopenerinSouthAfricaandsawapartialraceboycottaspartoftheongoingFISA–FOCAwarattheSanMarinoGrandPrix.Inpowerful,yetdangerouscars,twodriverslosttheirlives:GillesVilleneuveduringqualifyingfortheBelgianGrandPrixandRiccardoPalettiatthestartoftheCanadianGrandPrix.Lateronintheseason,championshipfavouriteDidierPironisufferedacareer-endingaccidentduringqualifyingfortheGermanGrandPrix.Theseincidentsandseveralothermajoraccidentsledtoregulationchangesaimedatincreasingdriversecurityforthefollowingseason. Rosbergwononlyoneraceduringtheseason–thefirstWorldChampiontodososinceMikeHawthornin1958–butconsistencygavehimthetitle,sealedatthelastraceoftheseasonaheadofPironiandJohnWatson.Elevendriverswonaraceduringtheseason,noneofthemmorethantwotimes,includingninedifferentwinnersinnineconsecutiveraces.Ferrari,whoreplacedVilleneuveandPironiwithPatrickTambayand1978WorldChampionMarioAndretti,managedtoscoreenoughpointstosecuretheconstructors'trophydespitetheirtragiclosses.Rosberg'schampionshipintheWilliamsFW08wasthelasttitleforanaturallyaspiratedcaruntilturbochargedengineswerebannedfor1989.…
