MotorsportjournalistNigelRoebucklaterwrotethatthe1982seasonwas"anuglyyear,pock-markedbytragedy,bydissension,bygreed,andyet,paradoxically,itproducedsomeofthemostmemorableracingeverseen".Itstartedwithadrivers'strikeattheseasonopenerinSouthAfricaandsawapartialraceboycottaspartoftheongoingFISA–FOCAwarattheSanMarinoGrandPrix.Inpowerful,yetdangerouscars,twodriverslosttheirlives:GillesVilleneuveduringqualifyingfortheBelgianGrandPrixandRiccardoPalettiatthestartoftheCanadianGrandPrix.Lateronintheseason,championshipfavouriteDidierPironisufferedacareer-endingaccidentduringqualifyingfortheGermanGrandPrix.Theseincidentsandseveralothermajoraccidentsledtoregulationchangesaimedatincreasingdriversecurityforthefollowingseason.
