简介：Thefilmmanagestostandoutfromanimmenseoeuvre(andapackedexhibitionspace)thatspansassemblagestopaintinganddrawingtofilm.Forthepiece,Connerreworkedfootagefromhis1966Super8film“EasterMorningRaga,”digitalizingthe8mmfootagetoexpandtheimages.Theresultappearslikeastopmotionpicture,withframesthatmoveinrhythmtothetrancelikeinstrumentalchantofTerryRiley’scomposition“InC”(1964).Variouslensflaresactasakindofcompositionalforce,drivingthemovementoftheshotsthroughclose-upsofplants,burningcandles,andanudewoman.Thehummingpaceofthecutsworkwiththesoundandthesometimesblue,sometimeshoneyamberlighttobuildtowardstheculminatingfeelingthatthefilmhassomehowtranscendedthesumofitsparts. Connerenvisioned“EasterMorning”asa“metaphysicalquestforrenewal,”andthepieceactsasatriumphantclosingacttoaretrospective–andalife–filledwithanxiousquestionsaboutthedestructiveconsequencesofhumanpower.Thereworkedversionmanagestobothliftawayfromthesixties-erathemesoftheoriginal,aswellasactasasignificantcontrasttotheapocalypticfeardominatingtherestoftheexhibition.Perhapsit’sthiscontrastthat,forme,buoysupthememorabilityofthefilm.Withhisfinalwork,Connerseemstosuggestthatthebestwaytoresolvealifefilledwithafearofdeathistolearntoacceptit.…
