Cho'sfilm,IntheShadowofGoldMountain,takesherfromMontrealtoVancouvertouncoverstoriesfromthelastlivingsurvivorsoftheChineseHeadTaxandExclusionAct.Thisdarkchapterinourhistory,from1885until1947,plungedtheChinesecommunityinCanadaintodecadesofdebtandfamilyseparation. AtthecentreofthefilmarepersonalaccountsofextraordinaryChineseCanadianswhosurvivedanerathatthreatenedtoeradicatetheirentirecommunity.Througharichmeldingofhistory,poetryandrawemotion,thisdocumentaryshedslightonanerathatshapedtheidentityofgenerations,withdeeplymovingtestimonials,itrevealstheprofoundwaysthishistorystillcastsitsshadow.
