LuisSepúlvedawasborninOvalleinChilein1949.AftersecondaryschoolinSantiago,hestudiedtheatreproductionattheNationalUniversity.In1969,Sepúlvedawasgivenafie-yearscholarshiptocontinuehisdramastudiesattheMoscowUniversity,butitwaswithdrawnafterfivemonthsonaccountof'misconduct'(hemadefriendswithsomedissidents,andhadtogobacktoChile). LuisSepúlvedawaspoliticallyactivefirstasaleaderofthestudentmovementandintheSalvadorAllendeadministrationinthedepartmentofculturalaffairswherehewasinchargeofaseriesofcheapeditionsofclassicsforthegeneralpublic.HealsoactedasamediatorbetweenthegovernmentandChileancompanies. AftertheChileancoupof1973whichbroughttopowerGeneralAugustoPinochethewasjailedfortwo-and-a-halfyearsandthenobtainedaconditionalreleasethroughtheeffortsoftheGermanbranchofAmnestyInternationalandwaskeptunderhousearrest. Hemanagedtoescapeandwentundergroundfornearlyayear.WiththehelpofafriendwhowasheadoftheAlliancefran?aiseinValparaísohesetupadramagroupthatbecamethefirstculturalfocusofresistance.Hewasrearrestedandgivenalifesentence(laterreducedtotwenty-eightyears)fortreasonandsubversion. TheGermansectionofAmnestyInternationalintervenedagainandhisprisonsentencewascommutedtoeightyearsofexile,andin1977heleftChiletoflytoSwedenwherehewassupposedtoteachSpanishliterature.AtthefirststopoverinBuenosAiresheescapedandmanagedtogotoUruguaybutsincemanyofhisUruguayanandArgentinianfriendsweredeadorinprisonbecauseoftherespectivedictatorshipshewentfirsttoS?oPauloinBrazilandthentoParaguay.HehadtoleaveagainbecauseofthelocalregimeandfinallysettledinQuitoinEcuadorguestofhisfriendJorgeEnriqueAdoum.HedirectedtheAllianceFran?aisetheatre,foundedatheatricalcompanyandtookpartinaUNESCOexpeditiontoassesstheimpactofcolonizationontheShuarIndians. DuringtheexpeditionhesharedthelifeoftheShuarsforsevenmonthsandcametoanunderstandingofLatinAmericaasamulticulturalandmultilingualcontinentwheretheMarxism-Leninismhewastaughtwasnotapplicabletoaruralpopulationthatwasdependentonitssurroundingnaturalenvironment.HeworkedinclosecontactwithIndianorganizationsanddraftedthefirstliteracyteachingplanfortheImbaburapeasants'federation,intheAndes. In1979hejoinedtheSimónBolívarinternationalbrigadewhichwasfightinginNicaraguaandafterthevictoryoftherevolutionhestartedworkingasajournalistandoneyearlaterheleftforEurope. HewenttoHamburginGermanybecauseofhisadmirationofGermanliterature(helearnedthelanguageinprison)especiallytheromanticsasNovalisandFriedrichH?lderlinandworkedthereasjournalisttravelingwidelyinLatinAmericaandAfrica.
