LuisSepúlvedawasborninOvalleinChilein1949.AftersecondaryschoolinSantiago,hestudiedtheatreproductionattheNationalUniversity.In1969,Sepúlvedawasgivenafie-yearscholarshiptocontinuehisdramastudiesattheMoscowUniversity,butitwaswithdrawnafterfivemonthsonaccountof'misconduct'(hemadefriendswithsomedissidents,andhadtogobacktoChile). LuisSepúlvedawaspoliticallyactivefirstasaleaderofthestudentmovementandintheSalvadorAllendeadministrationinthedepartmentofculturalaffairswherehewasinchargeofaseriesofcheapeditionsofclassicsforthegeneralpublic.HealsoactedasamediatorbetweenthegovernmentandChileancompanies.
