DIRECTOR’SNOTES Thelifeofarent-boyisoftendepictedaseithersexyandglamorousorblightedwithabuseanddrugs.Iwantedtotryandgetclosertotherealityandfocusontheeverydaynatureofthings,thenutsandboltsofthejob,therealpersonalitiesbehindtheonlineprofilesandmagazineadverts.Ididn’twanttopandertowhatpeopleexpectedfromthiskindoffilmorwateritdownforamoremainstreamaudience.IalsodecidedearlyonthattheprojectwouldbeworthlessunlessIworkedwithpeoplewithknowledgeofthesexindustry.Itwasn’tuntilaftercastingthataroughnarrativetookshape,changinganddevelopingastheshootingprogressed,butalwaysbasedonrealexperiences.Therewasneverascriptassuch,onlyastoryframework,onwhichallofthesceneswereimprovised.Theblurringofdocumentaryandfictioncameverymuchoutofthisprocess,usingelementsofeachtobestsuittheneedsofthestory.Iwantedthefilmtobetrulyauthentic,butthatdidnotmeanthateverythinghadtobecompletelyreal.Afterall,thelifeofanescortisfilledwithvariationsofthetruth,amixtureofrealityandfantasy,andIwantedtoexplorethisintheverynatureofthefilm’sconstruction.
