The1997FormulaOnecalendarfeaturedtwoneweventsintheLuxembourgGrandPrix,aswellastheAustrianGrandPrix,thelatterofwhichreturnedtothecalendarafteraten-yearabsence.TheonlyraceexitingthecalendarwasthePortugueseGrandPrixafter12yearsracedattheAutodromodoEstoril. ThechampionshipwasdecidedunderhighlycontroversialcircumstancesaschampionshipleaderMichaelSchumacherdeliberatelyrammedVilleneuvewhilsttryingtodefendhisraceleadinthefinalroundofthechampionshipattheEuropeanGrandPrixatJerez,Spain.SchumachercametoahaltinthegraveltrapandwasdeemedatfaultfortheaccidentbyFIA–beingpunishedbybeingstrippedofhis2ndplaceinthechampionship.Villeneuvefinishedthirdintheraceinspiteofthecontact.Schumacherstillkepthisfiveracewins.Villeneuvewonsevenraces,butwouldneverwinaFormulaOneGrandPrixagainbeforehis2006retirement.1997alsosawtheretirementofGerhardBergeraftermanyyearsinthesport,aswellasthefirstracewinsforHeinz-HaraldFrentzenandMikaHäkkinen.…
