DamonHillwontheDrivers'ChampionshiptwoyearsafterbeingbeatenbyapointbyMichaelSchumacher,makinghimthefirstsonofaWorldChampion(hisfatherGrahamhavingwonthetitlein1962and1968)tohavewonthetitlehimself.Hill,whohadfinishedrunner-upforthepasttwoseasons,wasseriouslythreatenedonlybyhisteammate,newcomerJacquesVilleneuve,the1995IndyCarandIndianapolis500champion.Williams-RenaulteasilywontheConstructors'title,astherewasnoothercompetitorstrongenoughtopostaconsistentchallengethroughoutthechampionship.ThiswasalsothebeginningoftheendofWilliams's1990sdominance,asitwasannouncedthatHillanddesignerAdrianNeweywoulddepartattheconclusionoftheseason,withenginemanufacturerRenaultalsoleavingafter1997.
