TheDrivers'ChampionshipwaswonforasecondconsecutivetimebyMikaHäkkinen,althoughEddieIrvine,DavidCoulthardandHeinz-HaraldFrentzenallhadachanceofwinningthetitleatvariousstages.FerrariwontheConstructors'Championship,whichpavedthewayfortheMichaelSchumachereraofFerraridominancebeginningin2000.However,Schumacher'sparticipationinthe1999championshipwascutshortduetoinjuryattheBritishGrandPrix,wherehesufferedabrokenleginacrash.HereturnedforthelasttworacesoftheseasoninordertoassistIrvineinhischampionshiprun.
