TheseasonsawalargeshufflingofthepeckingorderwithMcLaren-Mercedesemergingasthequickestconstructor.Häkkinenbuiltupaclearchampionshiplead,butastrongmid-seasonresurgencefromMichaelSchumacherandFerrarisawhimscoreahat-trickofwins,andfurtherwinsinHungaryandItalyputthetwotitlecontendersonequalpointsgoingintothepenultimateroundattheNürburgring.Schumachertookpoleandappearedtocontroltheraceintheearlyphase,butHäkkinenultimatelyshowedsuperiorracepaceandwon.WithHäkkinenhavingthefavouredpositionbeforethefinalround,SchumacherhadtohaveacarbetweenhimselfandHäkkineninthefinale.Schumachertookpole,butthenstalledonthegrid.Hefoughtbackrelentlesslyfromthebackofthepack,butrunningthirdhesufferedapunctureandHäkkinenwaschampionevenbeforethechequeredflag–whichhetookforhiseighthwinoftheseason.Ferrarineverthelesshadastrongseason,highlightedbyitsfirst1–2finishsince1990beingrecordedinFrance,withEddieIrvineholdingoffHäkkinentofinishsecondbehindSchumacher.IrvinefinishedsomewaybehindMcLaren'sseconddriverDavidCoulthardinthefinalstandings,buttheConstructors'Championshipraceremainedopenuntilthefinalround. WiththefactorywithdrawalofRenaultandthedepartureofdesignerAdrianNeweytoMcLaren,theunusuallyred-liveriedWilliamsteamhadadifficultandultimatelywinlesschampionshipdefencealongwithreigningDrivers'ChampionJacquesVilleneuve.WilliamsheldontothirdintheConstructors'racebutsuffereditsfirstwinlessseasonsince1988andthefirsttimeforeightyearssince1990withoutarunforthetitle.Thiswasthesamefor1999,buttheydidgetapodiuminCanada.Benettonalsohadatroubledwinlessseason,inwhichyoungdriverGiancarloFisichellastillstarredwithapolepositionandacoupleofpodiums.Jordanwerewithoutpointsafterhalfoftheseasonandlookedsetforadisappointingseason,butastrongresurgencesawtheteamtakeadvantageofthechaosintherain-struckBelgianGrandPrix,withDamonHillleadingteammateRalfSchumacherforaremarkable1–2.TheseasonalsosawthefinalraceforformerchampionteamTyrrell,withpatronKenTyrrellsellingtheteamtoBritishAmericanTobacco.Tyrrellfinishedonalow,notscoringasinglepointtheentireseason.…
